Chinook was developed by the USDA breeeding program in Washington State from a cross between Petham Golding and a USDA-selected male with high alpha acids and good storage properties. It was released in 1985 as a multipurpose high alpha acid vaiety with a mild to medium-heavy spicy aroma profile and fair storage stability. Matures mid to late season and is currently grown in Washington and Idaho and in small quantities in Oregon. The variety growns vigorously in all growing areas and yields best in the Yakima region.
