Details
Fuggle was propagated from a chance seedling in Kent, UK, By Mr. Richard Fuggle in 1875. It became the most widely grown hop in England (in 1950, it represented 78% of the English crop) until Verticillium wilt made production almost impossible in all of Kent and Sussex. Now it represents only about 10% of the West Midlands. It is also grown in the United States, mainly in Oregon, and Slovenia, where it has adopted its own character and is known as Styrian Golding.
This hop contributes all the essential charasteristics of flavor, aroma, and balanced bitterness, particularly as its relatively low alpha-acid content requires a high hopping rate to achieve desired bitterness levels. Fuggle is frequently blended with Goldings to improve "drinkability," adding roundness and fullness to to the palate. Sometimes used as a distinctive dry hop.
