Details
Challenger was bred at Wye College, England and released for commercial production in 1972. It is a grandaughter of Northern Brewer crossed with a downy mildew-resistant male from Germany, making it a "cousin" of Target.
Challenger is the successful product of Wye researchers' efforts to combine higher alpha-acids with technically good aroma, disease resistance, and good agronomic properties. It is considered dual-purpose, combining moderate amounts of alpha-acids with a kettle hop aroma (discribed as moderate and quite spicy). This variety also has good growing charasteristics with heavy yields. It is grown in England in the West Midlands and Kent(small quantities ar also grown in Belgium and France). Its fruity, almost scented aroma, with some spicy overtones, makes this a versatile kettle hop for all types of beer. It blends well with other English varieties and is sometimes used as late hop or dry hop, although full use is not made of its higher alpha content when used in this way.
