Details
First Gold is the first "commercial" dwarf aroma variety developed in England (or the world for that matter), bred from a cross-pollination of a Whitbread Golding Variety (WGV) with a dwarf male. This variety is the most exciting of the first dwarf varieties bred by the Hop Research Institute in Wye, Kent, where researchers are pioneering in dwarf breeds. Released for general cultivation in 1997.
First Gold has and attractive aroma similar to a Golding and displays some of the flavor notes identifiable with and its WGV mother, with an emphasis on fruity, slightly spicy notes. The aroma qualities it has inherited, coupled with its rather higher alpha-acids, gives this new variety the ability to be used at all stages of brewing. First Gold is very suitable as a general kettle hop and also provides a distinctive character when used for late or dry hopping.
