Named after its city of origin, Vienna lager is a reddish-brown malty beer. Sessionable with a toasty, bready malt character and light noble hop flavor, this beer is a great year-round drinker. This beer style became popular in Mexico as Austrians migrated there in the late 19th century. These beers today, like Dos Equis and Negra Modelo are sweeter and lighter-bodied than the original. This recipe, however, hearkens to the traditional formulations from pre-war Austria.
